The Unusual Pregnancy Cravings of Princess Catherine That Prince William Couldn’t Handle
The Princess of Wales had difficult pregnancies with Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis; this much is known.
In February 2020, Catherine talked candidly about her experience with hyperemesis gravidarum, a condition that causes severe vomiting in the early stages of pregnancy, on Giovanna Fletcher’s “Happy Mum, Happy Baby” podcast.
“It was completely decomposing. I was very ill. It fascinates me that even though I wasn’t eating what I should be, my body was still able to absorb all the nutrients it needed to grow new life.”
The Princess experienced cravings during all three of her pregnancies, just like many pregnant women do. She even tried a strange remedy to help her nausea.
For many women, food cravings are a common aspect of pregnancy. While cravings for sweets, ice cream, and fruit are common, they can also be connected to nutrients that a pregnant mother may need.
The Princess of Wales’ unusual pregnancy cravings
In her hometown of Berkshire, family friends prepared a fiery Indian curry for the Princess to quench her cravings during her first pregnancy.
The royal was spotted picking up a batch of spicy curry made at home by her family friend Chan Shingadia and her husband Hash, who owns the Spar store in Catherine’s Berkshire village of Upper Bucklebury, when she was approximately seven months pregnant.

When the expectant mother-to-be visited her parents, Michael and Carole Middleton, at the end of April 2013, the weekend of her second wedding anniversary, she picked up the dish from ‘Peach’s’ convenience stores in the charming Berkshire village.
Catherine’s husband, Prince William, is renowned for not enjoying spicy food, so he does not share her taste for extremely spicy curries.
When the Princess spoke with Prince William on BBC Radio 1 back in 2017, she shared her top lesson. “Curry, definitely,” Catherine replied, going on to say that William couldn’t handle the heat and wouldn’t eat it with her.
The Prince clarified, “I’m not a vindaloo man, put it that way.”

During her pregnancy with Prince Louis, Catherine is also reported to have loved thinly sliced pickles on brown toast. The pickles’ high sodium content, which the royal might have lost due to frequent vomiting, was probably what she craved.
Toast is generally considered a ‘safe’ option when reintroducing food after an illness because it is a very bland food.
